CSS Style Tools and Features

 < Day Day Up >

With a bit of knowledge of how CSS works, you're ready to incorporate CSS into your site, using the powerful tools and features available in Dreamweaver. The most obvious place to start is the CSS Styles panel.

The CSS Styles panel is part of the Design panel group by default. If you changed your default panel groups, you can always open the panel by choosing Window ® CSS Styles or by pressing Shift+F11. The panel displays style rules for the active open document only.

Apply versus Edit

The CSS Styles panel has two modes: Apply and Edit. You can build new styles in either mode, but the Edit mode enables you to see all the styles defined for a page, whether external or embedded. The advantage of separate modes is that you can click any style listed in Edit mode and directly access the dialog boxes used to define properties and values for style rules.

Although there are several different options for applying style rules to page elements, the Apply mode of the CSS Styles panel offers an easy, foolproof method of setting a rule to a specific element when needed. To apply a class to a selector, place your cursor into an element, and click the style in Apply mode. Other methods include right-clicking (Control+clicking) the active tag in the Tag selector (Figure 36-1) or right-clicking (Control+clicking) in the document in Design view to access the context menu, as shown in Figure 36-2.
