Setting Up E-mail Links

 < Day Day Up >

You can use text or an image to set up an e-mail link. An e-mail link uses an href that begins with mailto:

<a href=mailto:info@studiomxbible.com>send email</a>

Keep in mind that using this method exposes you to unscrupulous users that search the Web to locate valid e-mail addresses for junk mail targeting (spam). Because your e-mail address is right there in the code, it is easy to find by setting up a spider — a robot or 'bot program — to look for and collect addresses with the @ symbol.

Tip

Check out www.manastungare.com/asp/preventspam.asp, at the site of Manas Tungare, a developer from India, living in Atlanta, Georgia. This nifty page encodes the letters in your e-mail address with special characters that are not so easily read by e-mail 'bots. An e-mail address like the one for studiomxbible becomes

<A HREF= "mailto:%69%6E%66%6F%40%73%74%75%64%69%6F%6D%78%62%69%62%6C%65%2E%63%6F %6D">Send Email</A>

Enter your e-mail address into the Email field and click the Obfuscate button. To use the newly encoded address, copy and paste it into your Link field in Dreamweaver.

You can also add an e-mail link using Insert®Email Link, as shown in Figure 35-9. A dialog box opens where you enter the text of the link and the e-mail address.
