Using Block Formatting

 < Day Day Up >

The most basic HTML tags control the layout of text (and images) in the page. Macromedia Dreamweaver offers different options for adding markup to format your content into blocks. The Text menu, Property inspector, Insert bar/Text toolset, and Quick Tag Editor give you options to apply formatting, such as paragraphs, headings, lists, and more.

The Quick Tag Editor

To access the Quick Tag Editor, press Ctrl+T (Command+T) until Wrap Tag <> is displayed (Figure 33-7). To create a paragraph, type p between the brackets; then press Enter.

The Quick Tag Editor can edit, wrap, or insert HTML. To cycle through these options, press Control+T (Command+T) until the desired function appears. If you are not sure which tag you want to add with the Quick Tag Editor, wait briefly, and a list of HTML tags is displayed. Choose a tag and press Enter. More Tag Hints may be displayed to add attributes to the selected tag. Press Enter again to close the editor.

Tip

To prevent images from separating when the browser window is sized smaller, use the Quick Tag Editor to wrap <nobr></nobr> around the line of images.

Formatting the mission statement page

Habitat Alert site   Before doing this exercise copy the Habitat Alert folder (in the chapter33_exercise folder) onto your hard drive. Then define the folder as a new Dreamweaver site (refer to the "Defining a Site" section in Chapter 32).

Hint: If you already have another Habitat Alert site defined, then choose the Edit Site option in the Site panel of the Site Definition drop-down menu and change the path to the Local Root folder.

This exercise gives you a chance to use many of Dreamweaver's basic tools:

  1. Skip over the first block of text.

  2. The next six text blocks should form a bulleted list. Select all six paragraphs and click the Unordered List button on the Property inspector (Figure 33-8). You could also activate the Text toolset in the Insert bar to choose ul.

  3. Place your cursor into the line with Government Agencies and format as Heading 4 with the Format menu (click arrow to see options).

  4. Select the next six blocks and format them as a Unordered list (bullets).

  5. Format "Non-Profits" as Heading 4.

  6. Select the next 13 items and format them as a bulleted list.

  7. Save the page, preview it, and keep open for additional exercises.

Horizontal rules

Add a horizontal line between page elements to separate them visually. Follow these steps to insert a horizontal rule into the mission statement page:

  1. Place your cursor at the end of the first paragraph, and choose Insert ® Horizontal Rule.

  2. The Property inspector offers control over width, thickness, shading, and alignment, but you can access other attributes through the Tag Editor.

  3. In the Property inspector set the Width to 400px, the Height to 1, and uncheck the Shading box; then save and preview (Figure 33-9) the page.
