Lab 4.3: Installing an Imaginary Printer in a Windows XP System

The process involved in installing an imaginary printer in XP varies slightly from the previous lab.

Upon completion of this lab, you will be able to:

  • Install a printer in a Windows XP system.

  • Investigate printer properties.

Set Up

For this exercise, you will need a working Windows XP computer.

Exercise

In this exercise, you will complete the printer installation without having a printer attached to your computer. If you have a printer attached, the procedure is the same, except that you can test the installation by printing a test page.

  1. Boot to the Desktop and use the following sequence to see which printers are installed in your system:

Start Control Panel Printers and Other Hardware Printers and FaxesRecord any printers that appear in the Printers and Faxes folder:

  2. In the Printers and Faxes window, select Add Printer to begin the installation.

  3. Click Next in the Add Printer Wizard.

  4. Select the Local Printer Attached to This Computer option and click Next.

  5. Select the Use the Following Port – (LPT1) option and click Next.

  6. Select a manufacturer and printer. The choices do not matter, because you are not completing the installation.

  7. Type in a printer name. Answer No to the question Do you want to use this printer as the default printer? and click Next.

  8. Do not share the printer. Click Next.

  9. Do not print a test page—there is no printer.

  10. If requested, insert the Windows XP installation CD, select the file source, and then click OK. The source is the CD-ROM drive and Win XP (D:\I386).

  11. Record the printer settings displayed in the Completing the Add Printer Wizard window:

    Click Finish.

  12. In the Printer and Faxes window, right-click the printer icon and select Properties.

  13. In the printer properties display, select Ports and record the port used by the printer:

  14. Return to the Desktop.
