Lab 4.2: Installing an Imaginary Printer in a Windows 98 System

Printer installation requires the installation of a printer driver from the operating system installation CD, the printer manufacturer, or the Internet. Printers have traditionally been attached to the parallel port, but they often connect to the USB port or to a serial port (COM 1 or COM 2).

Upon completion of this lab, you will be able to:

  • Install a printer in a Windows 98 system

  • Investigate printer properties

Set Up

For this exercise, you will need a working Windows 98 computer.

Exercise

In this exercise, you will complete the printer installation without having a printer attached to your computer. If you have a printer attached, you can install an additional printer by following this procedure; you will also be able to test the installation by printing a test page.

Note

Installing an imaginary printer is often a good idea while you’re learning. Doing so gives you a printer to experiment with without the possibility of misconfiguring your real printer.

  1. Boot to the Desktop and use the following sequence to see which printers are installed in your system:

    Start Ø Settings Ø Printers

Record any printers that appear in the Printers folder:

  2. Double-click the Add Printer icon and then click Next to begin the installation.

  3. Select Local Printer and click Next.

  4. In the first Add Printer Wizard screen, select a manufacturer and printer model. The choices do not matter, because you are installing an imaginary printer. (See Figure 4.4.)

Figure 4.4: Selecting the printer driver to install

  5. Select a printer port and click Next.

  6. Enter a printer name and click Next.

  7. Do not print a test page—there is no printer.

  8. If requested , insert the Windows 98 installation CD, select the file source, and click OK. The source is the CD-ROM drive and Win 98 ( D:\WIN98 ).

  9. The printer icon should appear in the Printers folder. Right-click the printer icon and then list the options available. The options may be different for different printers:

  10. Select Properties. Record the printer port from the General tab and the printer driver from the Driver tab:
