Lab 15.3: Creating and Accessing Shares

The whole idea behind networking is to make resources such as files available to others. This process begins with sharing folders so the files contained in the folders are available to other users on the network. Both computers used need to have the same protocol installed and configured.

Accessing Internet sites is nothing more than an elaborate system of sharing files. Your Internet browser allows you to access files and then displays them in the proper format.

Upon completion of this lab, you will be able to:

  • Create a share

  • Access a share on another computer

Set Up

For this lab, you will need two computers networked together.

Exercises

Once you create a share on your computer, you have the opportunity to control access to the share. In Windows 98, you can apply several levels of access control: Read Only, Full, or Depends on Password. Doing so allows you to determine if users have full access or read-only access. You can also apply passwords to control the level of access.

Windows 2000 gives you more control over how users access your resources. You can apply permissions to the share that determine who has what kind of access to the resources.
