Loadmovie Doesn't Load a Jpeg

graphics/151fig02.jpg

If you've moved into the more advanced world of Flash development, then you've no doubt attempted to load a JPEG image into your SWF using the loadMovie command. When they introduced this capability, I was thrilled. No more converting to SWFs! However, you may have run into some trouble with certain JPEGs not loading. Do you want to know why? Chances are, the image in question is set to be progressive. A progressive JPEG is one that can be viewed in a browser as it loads. The problem is that the Flash player does not have a compressor for progressive JPEGs like the Flash authoring program does. It's a good idea to constantly test your movies to make sure that your images are loading as expected. If you find one that is not, chances are good that this is the reason. Convert the image to a non-progressive JPEG, and you're all set.
