A.1 Supporting Legacy Windows Applications

Some users are stuck using older applications that don't (and never will) support WebDAV. Yet they may need to use these applications to edit documents stored on the repository. There's an alternative to taking multiple steps (download, then edit, then upload), and that's to use a drive-mapping client application. Chapter 10, WebDAV Products and Tools, discusses two drive-mapping clients for Windows (Xythos WebFile Client and South River Technologies' WebDrive). In addition, there's a free tool to map a WebDAV repository to a disk drive on Linux (the open-source DAVfs Linux file system driver).

Note that third-party software is not necessary to map a WebDAV repository to a drive letter on Windows XP, because it has native support for mapping to WebDAV repositories. On Mac OS X, the best WebDAV mounting tool is the operating system itself.
