This chapter covers the following topics:

  • ONS 15454 Shelf Assembly

  • Timing, Communications, and Control Cards

  • Optical Service Channel Module

  • Optical Service ChannelCombiner/Separator Module

  • Alarm Interface Controller Card

  • ONS 15454 MSTP DWDM ITU-T Channel Plan

  • 32-Channel Multiplexer Cards

  • 32-Channel Demultiplexer Cards

  • Four-Channel Multiplexer/Demultiplexer Cards

  • Four-Band OADM Filters

  • One-Band OADM Filters

  • Channel OADM Cards

  • ONS 15454 MSTP ROADM

  • ONS 15454 MSTP Transponder/Muxponder Interfaces

  • ONS 15454 MSTP Optical Amplifiers

  • ONS 15454 MSTP Dispersion Compensation Unit

  • ONS 15454 MSTP Supported Network Configurations

As noted in earlier chapters, the flexible, scalable design of the Cisco ONS 15454 lends itself to multiple uses within the carrier transport environment. Carriers can take advantage of its time-division multiplexing (TDM) and Ethernet solutions, and its support of dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) as well. The ONS 15454 is transformed into a Multiservice Transport Platform (MSTP) by slotting its common control and interface cards with DWDM-specific interface cards. Although the ONS 15454 can be used for "hybrid" TDM/DWDM applications, this chapter and others focus solely on the DWDM operation. This chapter highlights the basic building blocks of the MSTP. You will examine the following features and functions associated with each MSTP component:

  • Shelf assembly

  • Common control cards

  • Multiplexer/demultiplexer cards

  • Optical add/drop interface cards

  • Transponder/muxponder interface cards

  • Amplifier interface cards

  • Dispersion compensation unit (DCU)

After a thorough examination of each interface type, the chapter concludes with network topology and shelf configuration examples. Each shelf configuration example is intended to show the most common equipment configurations applicable to today's networks.
