Headset Basics

Sony thoughtfully included a nice headset with the PSP, and it even comes with a remote control (Figure 2.10), so you can adjust volume and stuff while the PSP is in your pocket. It's white, which is trendy; the sound is fairly decent, but the earbuds are simply horrible. I don't know about your experience, but the earbuds tend to pop out of my ears all the time.

Figure 2.10. The remote is cool, but frankly, the earbuds suck. Fortunately, you can use any headset you want with the PSP remote.

Sony tells you in the instruction manual that you can't use any other headphone remote with the PSP and that you can't use the PSP headphone remote with any other device. That's truebut you can use virtually any set of headphones with a 1/8-inch minijack that you like.

If you have an iPod, you can use its earbuds with your PSP; just plug them into the remote or into the headphone jack on the PSP itself. Any headsets designed for MP3 players, even those swanky noise-canceling ones, will work with the PSP. So if you want, hurl your PSP's included earbuds out the nearest window, and grab a set of headphones that appeals to you.
