When someone sends you an e-mail message, the address to which the sender sends it can differ, depending on the location of the originating computer. Let's say your OpenVMS username is JENNY. Different senders may express your e-mail address in different formats, as follows:
These senders May send to this address Internet, DECnet, Local jenny@machine.domain.topdomain Internet, DECnet, Local jenny@domain.topdomain DECnet, Local node::jenny Local jenny
"Internet" senders are Internet users anywhere in the world. "DECnet" senders are users of any node on your DECnet network. "Local" senders are users of your particular OpenVMS machine.
The first two address formats may be interchangeable on your system.
Your system manager may also set up additional Internet addresses as needed. For instance, the system manager may configure the system so that Internet mail sent to "jenny," "jen," or "jennifer" are all routed to the JENNY account.
You may also configure your OpenVMS account to automatically forward any mail it may receive to any other Internet e-mail address via the SET FORWARD command within the MAIL utility.
