Software Licenses

Many OpenVMS software products require a license to be installed before they are used. For many, you must use the OpenVMS License Management Facility (LMF) to load the licenses onto your system.

Software vendors usually supply your license in one of two formats: a paper product authorization key (PAK) or a DCL LICENSE command with the appropriate qualifiers to license the product. Some LICENSE commands may come in the form of a command procedure for easier execution.

To work with software licenses, you must use a fully privileged user account.

If you receive a DCL LICENSE command, issue it at the DCL prompt. It may be helpful to copy-and-paste the command to avoid errors.

If you receive a PAK, use the command procedure SYS$UPDATE:VMSLICENSE.COM.

At the VMSLICENSE menu, choose REGISTER to enter a new license. You will be asked to enter the information found on your PAK. For blank PAK fields, press ENTER when prompted for that field.

Please note that a license must be enabled, not just registered, for the software product to work. Answer yes when asked if the license should be loaded.

VMSLICENSE.COM may also be used to disable or remove licenses or to list the licenses on your system.
