Using a Mouse

The mouse is the second most common type of input device. You use the mouse for navigating, selecting, or drawing. The mouse movements are translated into computer instructions in the form of motion and button selection. To start a mouse operation, simply move the mouse pointer on the screen until it is in the correct position and click one of the mouse buttons.

Many people use a mouse pad to provide a non-slick surface to roll the mouse on. The mouse pad serves two other important functions. First, the pad represents a finite physical space for moving the mouse. If you move off the pad, you sense the change and, given practice, move your mouse back onto the pad. Second, the pad offers a clean space that should be kept free of debris. Dust, hair, and food crumbs can degrade or damage the internal mechanical components found in most mice.

The following graphic illustrates the mechanical components found in a mouse. The ball in the center touches the pad and rolls as you move the mouse. The ball moves two rollers that are connected to mechanical sensors. The movements of both rollers are interpreted into movements of the mouse pointer on the screen.

A mouse can connect to a computer using several different connector types. The DB-9 connector, the oldest, has been replaced by the DIN-type connectors. USB is the most recent connector type available.
