Peer-to-peer networks do not use dedicated network servers for authenticating users and providing secure access to network resources. In this model, clients share resources, and other clients have access to whatever has been shared.
The role of the primary domain controller, or PDC, is to store the domain accounts database, called the Security Accounts Manager, or SAM. The PDC also sends updates of the SAM database to any BDCs within the domain.
BDCs offload logon authentication from the PDC. They also provide fault tolerance if the PDC is offline.
