Final Thoughts on Successful Workplace Relationships

  1. Different individuals have different values, talents, beliefs, fears, and styles, each of which may have a substantial effect on the way the individual operates. We are all unique, and we are all valuable.

  2. Acknowledge and appreciate your peers. Show support and appreciation for the work being done by others, and (sorry for sounding corny) you will receive much more in return.

  3. Take responsibility for your actions—admit your mistakes, apologize, and move on. We are all human, and we all understand that mistakes happen, so when you are wrong, admit it and move ahead.

  4. Understand that even successful workplace relationships are not perfect, and that you may have coworkers, bosses, and employees that you do not agree with, or just do not like. Learn from those experiences, maintain a keen awareness of what is going on around and inside of you, keep your reputation strong, and control your career.

  5. Understand the distinction between

    • Disappointment and failure

    • Confidence and arrogance

    • Assertiveness and aggression

    • Being a loyal employee and being a doormat

    • Being kind and being weak

    • Observing and judging

    • Responding and reacting

  6. Be aware of the connection between your fears and your judgments.

  7. Fears can be needs based, so identify your needs and get them met—you will eliminate the fear.

  8. Stop making excuses.

  9. Managing change is a choice; change will happen, whether you fight it or embrace it.

  10. Reframe your focus from who is right to what is right.

  11. Give up worry and suffering—it never changes the outcome.

  12. Be aware of your perspective: optimistic or pessimistic, narrow or wide, close or distant.

  13. Choice: We are what we think.

  14. Your assumptions about other people, especially about what they are thinking, are often wrong.
