Summary

This chapter started by reviewing essential network knowledge. Topics included network topologies, networking hardware, Ethernet, the OSI model, and TCP/IP basics. This chapter is not designed to teach you everything you need to know about networking; no single chapter could accomplish that. The items presented are ones you must be familiar with for the test.

You then learned about network configuration files. Two options are available for providing clients with network configuration information. The first is to use local files, and the second is to create a network configuration server. If you have a large network, using network configuration servers can greatly reduce your administrative overhead.

Then, the chapter covered Remote Procedure Calls (RPCs). RPCs are used to start processes on remote computers. In a client-server network, RPCs are used to establish most client-to-server communications.

After reading about RPCs, you learned about remote access using TCP/IP commands. The three main commands you will use for remote access are rlogin, telnet, and ftp. Next, you learned about various other TCP/IP commands.

Finally, the chapter ended by discussing where to find networking information within the OpenBoot PROM.
