Exam Essentials

Understand the importance of the LP print service. The LP print service controls all aspects of printing in Solaris, from the software components, such as drivers and the print spooler, to hardware, such as the printer.

Know how to stop and restart the LP print service. The LP print service is stopped with the /etc/init.d/lp stop command and restarted with the /etc/init.d/lp start command.

Know how to add a printer. Printers are commonly added through the graphical Solaris Print Manager. However, printers can also be added with the lpadmin command.

Know how to check a printer's status. Printer status is examined with the lpstat command.

Know the commands used to perform printer administration. There are really too many commands to list here, but it's a good idea to know the commands associated with printer management tasks, such as creating printer classes, disabling and enabling printers, accepting and rejecting print jobs, and moving and canceling print jobs.

Know the commands used to display process information. Process information is typically displayed with the ps and pgrep commands.

Know how to terminate a process. Processes are terminated with the kill and pkill commands.

Know the differences between at and crontab files. If you wish to schedule a process to run once, you would use the at command to create an at job. For processes that need to run on a regular schedule, the crontab command can create batch files to suit your needs.
