inconsistent

In the UNIX File System (UFS), this state exists when the information stored on the disk is different from what is indicated in the UFS database. This can occur from a sudden loss of power or hard disk damage.

incremental backups

A backup that backs up only data that has changed recently, as opposed to backing up an entire volume.

indirect map

An AutoFS map file that uses mount points defined in the master map, or the auto_master file. Indirect maps establish map points by using a substitution key value.

init state

Also known as a run level, an init state defines the operation of Solaris, including which resources and services are available to users. Solaris 9 has eight init states, although only seven are used.

initialization files

The individual configuration files that make up the user profile.

inode

A file system entry that contains a complete listing of a file's attributes, such as the file's owner, group, permissions, and last access time.

install server

A custom JumpStart server that contains images of the Solaris installation files to be installed on client computers.

interactive package

A software installation option that enables you to install software without human intervention, through the use of a response file.

interlace

A block of data written to a stripe in a striped volume. The interlace value (which indicates the size of the data blocks) can be configured within Solaris.

Internet Protocol (IP)

The Network layer protocol in the TCP/IP protocol suite. IP is responsible for host addressing and the routing of network packets.
