Summary

This chapter covered the auditing of system events and the logs that hold the messages generated from audited events.

The syslog facility is the logging mechanism for Solaris 9 and is managed by the syslogd daemon. The primary configuration file for syslogd is /etc/syslog.conf, and the other file controlling syslog behavior is /etc/default/syslogd.

If you want to manually create entries in log files, you can use the logger command. The logger command enables you to enter your own comments or import data from existing files to be logged.

Finally, this chapter covered the Internet services daemon, inetd. The inetd daemon is responsible for listening for and responding to remote service requests. Although the /etc/ inetd.conf file is considered the primary configuration file, the /etc/default/inetd file enables you to choose whether you want to log all incoming network requests.
