Chapter 14: Access Does the Web

Overview

For many businesses, computing over the Web is the way of the future. However, Web development techniques are often novel and unintuitive to typical Microsoft Access developers. Access 2003 addresses the need of Access developers to deliver powerful, full-featured Web applications in an easy and familiar development environment. Access 2003 offers rapid application development (RAD) techniques for the Web based on enhanced data access pages, the Microsoft Office 2003 Web Components, and FrontPage 2003. This chapter shows you how to tap into all these capabilities to create productive Web solutions.

After providing a brief overview of Web development techniques targeting the special needs of Access developers, this chapter introduces Microsoft FrontPage 2003. FrontPage 2003 integrates tightly with Office 2003, but it is not available as part of any Microsoft Office 2003 Editions (and must be purchased separately). FrontPage is a natural tool for managing the Web sites that make your Jet and SQL Server databases available to users. The chapter next presents step-by-step examples of graphical design techniques for creating forms and reports on a special kind of Web page known as a data access page. These forms and reports bind directly to Jet and Microsoft SQL Server databases. You'll learn how to make these forms and reports dynamic and interactive through the integrated development environment (IDE) behind them. Several samples in the chapter illustrate how to build event procedures with the IDE. Furthermore, you'll learn some easy ways to tackle advanced topics, such as programmatically creating Web-based forms and reports. Access 2003 enables you to create new Web-based forms and reports based on existing Access forms and reports.
