Installing Windows Vista

As daunting as the process of reinstalling your entire system may seem, the actual Windows Vista installation process is probably the easiest part. If you can insert a CD and answer the basic questions posed by the wizard-style installation interface, you'll be just fine. It depends on the speed of your computer, but you can generally expect that it will take anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours to reinstall Windows Vista start to finish.

Caution

Be sure to complete the tasks outlined in the pre-installation tasks section prior to reinstalling Windows Vista. The following steps will perform a clean installation of Windows Vista, meaning that all personal files, programs, and other existing settings stored on your hard drive will be lost.

Note

The following instructions assume that you are performing a clean installation of Windows Vista using the full (not upgrade) version of the product. If you are performing the installation with a Windows Vista upgrade disc, you will be prompted to supply the CD relating to your previous operating system's full version during the process.

Follow these steps to perform a clean installation of Windows Vista:

  1. Power on your computer and insert your Windows Vista installation CD.

  2. Restart your computer with the Windows Vista CD inserted. When the Press Any Key To Boot From CD Or DVD message appears, press the spacebar (or, well, any other key).

  3. At the initial Windows Vista installation screen, select your installation language, time and currency format, and input language. Click Next.

  4. Click the Install Now button.

  5. At the Type Your Product Key For Installation screen, enter the 25-digit product key provided with your Windows Vista DVD and click Next.

  6. On the license agreement screen, select I Accept The License Terms and click Next.

  7. At the Which Type Of Installation Do You Want? screen, click Custom (advanced).

  8. On the Where Do You Want To Install Windows? screen, click the partition on which Windows Vista should be installed and click Next.

  9. After all files have been copied and installed, your PC will restart and the Windows Vista installation process will continue. Select your country or region and keyboard layout, and then click Next.

  10. At the Choose A Username And Picture screen, enter a username and password, and then click Next.

  11. On the Type A Computer Name And Choose A Desktop Background screen, enter a name for your computer, pick a desktop background image, and click Next.

  12. At the Help Protect Windows Automatically screen, click Use Recommended Settings.

  13. At the Review Your Time And Date Settings screen, pick the correct time and date settings for your location and click Next.

  14. On the You're Ready To Start screen, click Start.

Congratulations - you've successfully reinstalled Windows Vista! It's now time to move on to the critically important post-installation tasks.
