Summary

Infections from viruses, worms, and Trojan horses are among the most prevalent and constant threats to your PC's security and your personal privacy. New viruses are being developed and released onto the Internet almost daily, so it's critical that you keep your PC properly protected and free of infection.

Keep the following points in mind when it comes to preventing and removing virus infections:

  • Install antivirus software, and keep it running and updated with the latest virus definitions at all times. (Remember that running antivirus software without updated virus definition files is almost the same as working without virus protection at all.) Use the scheduling capabilities of your antivirus software to check for updates at least once a day.

  • Use an antivirus program that scans both inbound and outbound e-mail messages for viruses. This stops your computer from sending viruses to other users, and helps to ensure that your computer is properly protected when viruses are received in e-mail messages from others.

  • Always scan all programs and files downloaded from the Internet (or obtained from other users) for viruses prior to opening them.

  • Run a complete virus scan for all drives on your computer at least once per week.

  • Ensure that the latest security updates and Service Packs are applied to protect your Windows Vista system. Many virus-like threats are designed to seek out and infect unpatched Windows systems.

  • Install personal firewall software that supports both inbound and outbound packet filtering capabilities. Although a firewall won't actually remove or prevent a virus that finds its way onto your system, it can help to minimize the damage that occurs as a result of a virus infection.

  • Always think before you click. Never assume that any file is virus-free, regardless of its original source.
