INTERPRETING YOUR SELF-DISCLOSURE AND FEEDBACK PROFILE

Now that you have created your Self-Disclosure and Feedback Profile, what does it mean? The assessment measures three components of the attribute Self-Disclosure and Feedback: the Arena, the Blind Spot, and the Facade.

Self-Disclosure and Feedback Profile

Directions:

  1. Enter the three subtotals (Arena, Blind Spot, and Facade) from page 143 in the spaces indicated just above the chart below. The highest possible score for each subtotal is 15.

  2. Start with your Arena subtotal. Count diagonally from the upper left-hand corner of the grid at 0 to the lower right and mark your Arena subtotal on the diagonal line.

  3. Mark your Blind Spot subtotal on the horizontal line across the top of the grid, counting left to right from 0 in the upper left-hand corner.

  4. Mark your Facade subtotal on the vertical line on the left side of the grid, counting top to bottom from 0 in the upper left-hand corner.

  5. Create your profile by connecting the three marks. Starting with the Blind Spot mark on the line at the top of the grid, draw a line to the Arena mark on the diagonal line, then over to the Facade mark on the line to the left.

end example

  • The Arena score is your self-perception of what you believe your Arena to be. Your perception of your Arena may be greater or smaller than either your Blind Spot or your Facade. If such a discrepancy exists, you may want to think about why your self-perception is different from how you actually responded to the statements.

  • The Blind Spot score indicates what is known to others but unknown to you. The more you seek feedback on your behavior, the larger your Arena and the smaller your Blind Spot. A high Blind Spot score indicates that you seek feedback on a regular basis. A low Blind Spot score suggests that as a rule you avoid feedback.

  • The Facade score indicates what is known to you but hidden from others. The more you self-disclose information about yourself, the larger your Arena and the smaller your Facade. A high Facade score indicates that you are open to self-disclosing information about yourself. A low Facade score suggests that you generally keep personal information to yourself.

  • If your Arena score is lower than the scores of your Blind Spot, Facade, or both, you may have a poor perception of how you come across to others.

  • If your Arena score is higher than the scores of your Blind Sport, Facade, or both, you may have an inaccurate perception of how open you truly are to self-disclosure and feedback. You're doing better than you thought!

Create a pane on your profile using just your Blind Spot and Facade scores. Does your Arena score fall inside or outside the pane? Thinking about the Self-Disclosure and Feedback Assessment,

  • Does the profile fit with the image you have of yourself?

  • Do you think your work colleagues' profiles reflect your image of them?

  • How might you improve your comfort with self-disclosure?

  • How might you solicit more feedback?

  • What do you think the Self-Disclosure and Feedback Profile would look like for your business?

  • How does that profile help or hinder you in becoming a Powerhouse Partner?
