Extract a Still Shot from a Video Clip

Taking a still shot from a video file is a completely different process from capturing photos from other sources. Because you are working with video, you need to use VideoWave, Easy Media Creator's video-editing application.

Capturing still shots from a video is not to be confused with extracting the still shots you have taken with a camcorder using a memory card. In this task you are capturing one frame from a video file and saving it as a photo.

Note

A video file is not nearly as high a quality as most photo files. The pictures you capture from a video file are not very big, and won't look very good printed out. Captured pictures are great to add to a video production or slideshow, however.

Capture Still Shots from a Video

Select DVD & Video in the Project Pane

Select the DVD & Video option in the project pane. This brings up the DVD & Video menu.

Select Edit Video

From the DVD & Video menu, select Edit Video. This launches VideoWave, Easy Media Creator's video-editing application.

Select Create New Production

After VideoWave has launched, you are given the choice to create a new production or to edit an existing production. Unless you have a VideoWave production that you would like to take a photo from, select Create New Production and set your format to the original format of the video file from which you would like to capture the photo.

Select Add Photo/Video

After you have opened a new production, you need to add the video file from which you want to capture a photo. Select Add Photo/Video from the Add Content menu. This brings up Media Manager.

Browse to Desired Video

After you have brought up Media Manager, browse to the location of the video file from which you would like to import a photo. Select it and click Open.

Use the Storyline to Locate an Image

You can locate your image on the storyboard in a number of ways. You can use the jog dial to gradually make your way through the video, you can drag the selection line through the video until you come to the right spot, or you can play the video back and stop it at the right spot. You can take as many photos out of the video as you want, so your choice might depend on whether you are looking for something specific or just trying to capture photos of an experience.

Click Extract Image from Production

After your image is displayed in the Preview window, click on the Extract Image from Production button (the camera icon) in the lower right of the video preview window. This brings up the Save File As window.

Choose Destination

After you have brought up the Save File As window, browse to the destination path on your computer to which to save the images. The destination path is a location on a hard disk or any directly writable device, such as an SD card, USB drive, and so on. Make this a folder that is conveniently accessible and easy to remember. When it comes time to add these photos to a project, you want to be able to find them again.

Click Save

After you have chosen a destination for your image, click Save. This takes you back to VideoWave where you can capture as many still shots as you would like before exiting VideoWave.

Exit VideoWave

After you are done capturing your still shots, exit VideoWave. This takes you back to the Easy Media Creator Home page where you have many opportunities to have fun with the photos you have just imported.
