Preface

The computer industry has made incredible progress with information sharing since the introduction of local area networks (LANs) in the 1980s. These advancements have produced services and tools that increase user productivity while decreasing their workload. Companies have come to rely on networks for virtually all aspects of business, such as accounting, payroll, mail, communications, advertising, and banking the list goes on and on. All this comes at a price, however. In return for having a high-speed network to increase employee and company productivity, each business must also incur an often enormous support cost. Novell recognizes this and provides a solution Zero Effort Networks, or ZENworks, for Desktops.

ZENworks is the first directory services-based desktop management tool that reduces the cost of owning networked PCs and makes using networks easier. ZENworks for Desktops builds on this initial release and leverages the functionality of NDS to make Windows-based desktops easier to use and manage without sacrificing power or flexibility. It allows the network administrators to leverage NDS to ensure that users can focus on their business, not their PC. With automated application delivery and repair, desktops customized for user's needs, and with easy problem resolution, ZENworks for Desktops gives users all the power of the PC without as high an administrative cost for making it work.

This book is your guide to leveraging ZENworks for Desktops to distribute applications, manage users, and maintain desktop PCs. This book provides steps to set up and use the advanced features of ZENworks for Desktops to cut your administrative efforts and costs, while making the network environment much more friendly to users.
