Summary

Wireless carrier networks have evolved from providing voice-only services to being able to provide viable alternatives to wired residential and commercial broadband offerings. This new range of services can cater for fixed, nomadic, and mobile users, and can generally support network roaming. Where mature location infrastructure exists, this can be integrated with the packet data services, allowing an end-point to retrieve and use location information in the same manner as it would for any other data access network-that is, from a LIS using the HELD protocol. Where an intelligent core, such as IMS, is deployed, the network is able to request location from the LIS regardless of the access type. This leaves the arbitration of the best location determination technique to the LIS, which may, for a position, select more than one mechanism to determine the location of the end-point.
