Summary

In conclusion, it is possible to provide IP location services in cable networks but owing to the architecture, physical termination points can only be associated with location based on a logical identifier such as an Ethernet MAC address. This requires each cable modem to be uniquely provisioned into the cable modem network, and for this information to be readily available to the ISP. Making this information available to the ISP is less challenging than in other network configurations since cable networks tend to provide service through a very small set of ISPs. The drawback of provisioning logical identifiers in this manner reveals itself in the guise of providing an incorrect location when a cable modem is moved from one residence to another without a re-registration occurring.
