Select Menu
Q1:

What's the difference between Grow and Similar?

A1:

Both of these options (found under the Select menu) alter an existing selection, with the key difference being "where they look." Grow looks for adjacent pixels that are close to the color of the existing selection. Similar also looks for adjacent pixels that are close to the color of the existing selection, but throughout the entire image.

Q2:

Is it possible to control how Select>Similar selects colors?

A2:

Yes, the Tolerance setting for the Magic Wand tool (W) influences how the Select>Similar command works. (Before using the command, enter a Tolerance in the Options Bar for the Magic Wand.) As with the Magic Wand, a lower number selects fewer colors, while higher numbers will select a wider range of colors.

Q3:

How can I recover a selection I made previously? I made a selection and then deselected it and did a few more operations. Is it possible to get that selection back without going into the History palette?

A3:

As long as you didn't make a new selection since the last one, you should be okay. Go to the Select menu and choose Reselect. This will "reload" the previous selection. Again, this only works if you have not made a new selection. On the other hand, it does work even if you have done a whole series of operations, such as painting, filters, etc. Note: Going back to a previous state in the History palette would most likely "lose" some steps, so Reselect is usually the better choice.

Q4:

Can I use Transform Selection to change a selection to a specific size ?

A4:

Yes, just choose Select>Transform Selection, and then in the Options Bar, enter the specific Width and Height for the selection. Although the measurements are in percentages, you can enter any measurement unit. For example, type "3 in" to override the percent, making the selection 3 inches wide.

Q5:

Why is everything under the Select menu grayed out?

A5:

If you don't have anything selected, some menu items will be unavailable because they are dependent upon having a selection. If the entire menu is grayed out, it's usually because either Free Transform (Command-T [PC: Control-T]) or Select>Transform Selection is still activepress Enter to finalize the transformation and continue.
