WHICH VERSION OF RPG IS COVERED

The RPG language described in this text is the same language implemented by the IBM Corporation on IBM AS/400 and iSeries midsized computers. A subset of this language is also available on other operating systems.

This text discusses only RPG IV implementations of the RPG language. The RPG cycle is no longer considered a productive method for programming. The modern RPG programmer avoids using the RPG cycle. In its place, structured programming constructs are used. Therefore the RPG Cycle, while still included for completeness, is covered only briefly in Chapter 3.

The example code in this book illustrates certain techniques such as how to specify an array in RPG IV. The example segments of source code are not intended to be compiled, but are to illustrate how readers can write similar routines for their own programs.
