Chapter 8. Back to the Future |
The future of distributed computing may very well be an interesting mix of the old and the new. Older legacy systems that include mainframe-based transaction, database, and COBOL applications are finding new opportunities for interconnection based on XML data descriptions, SOAP messaging, and Web services frameworks that allow legacy systems to package functionality either as Web services or to extend capabilities by acting as a client for other Web services. Similarly, newer P2P applications are emerging that offer innovative ways to leverage the loosely coupled space of the Web for collaboration and sharing. How these newer P2P technologies play with existing object systems and older legacy applications remains to be seen, but with data free to move across the Web and open to the forces of combinatoric interaction, we can expect the unexpected as the XML-driven data revolution takes us into the future. |
