Changing the Relationship of Elements on the Page

When you insert an object such as a picture into a document, it moves any associated text out of the way. You can change the way text wraps around objects and the relationship of overlapping objects by using the buttons in the Arrange group on the Format contextual tab.

When you choose any text wrapping option other than Behind Text or In Line With Text, you can specify that a picture be positioned in one of two ways:

  • Absolutely. This option positions the picture at a distance you set from a margin, page, paragraph, or line.

  • Relatively. This type of positioning is determined by the relationship of the picture to a margin or page.

After you position a picture, adding text might upset the arrangement of text and graphics on the page. You can specify whether a picture should remain anchored in its position on the page or should move with its related text. You can also specify whether the picture should be allowed to overlap text.

When graphics overlap each other, they are stacked. The stacking order (which graphic appears on top) is initially determined by the order in which you inserted the graphics. You can change the order by selecting a graphic and clicking the Bring To Front or Send To Back button in the Arrange group to move the graphic to the top or bottom of the stack. If you click either button's arrow and then click Bring Forward or Send Backward, the graphic moves forward or backward in the stack one position at a time.

In this exercise, you will modify the text-wrapping, position, and stacking order of pictures that have already been inserted into a document.

1.

Scroll to the bottom of the first page, and drag the picture of a bamboo grove up to the beginning of the word TESSELLATUS in the middle of the paragraph that begins Because they are so easy.

The picture is positioned wherever you dropped it, and the surrounding text is moved to make room.

2.

On the Format contextual tab, in the Arrange group, click the Text Wrapping button, and then click More Layout Options.

The Advanced Layout dialog box opens, with the In Line With Text option selected.

3.

Click the Square wrapping style, and in the Wrap text area, select the Both sides option. Then click the Picture Position tab.

The options on this tab control the location of the picture on the page and whether it moves when you make changes to the text.

4.

Under Horizontal, select the Alignment option, click the Alignment arrow, and then click Centered. Then under Vertical, change the Absolute position setting to 0".

5.

Click OK.

The picture is repositioned so that it is aligned with the top and center of the paragraph, with the paragraph text wrapped on either side.

6.

Click to the left of the word Because at the beginning of the paragraph, and press .

The picture moves with the paragraph.

7.

8.

Scroll to the next page, and change the text wrapping style of the two pictures on that page from In line with text to Tight.

The relationship of the pictures with the text is broken, and because they are now essentially floating over the text, they both move to the first page.

9.

Scroll to the top of the document, and drag the selected picture down and to the right, releasing the mouse button while the pictures are still overlapped.

10.

In the Arrange group, click the Text Wrapping button, and then click More Layout Options.

11.

In the Advanced Layout dialog box, on the Text Wrapping tab, under Wrap text, select the Right only option, and then click OK.

12.

On the Format tab, in the Arrange group, click the Send to Back button.

The lower picture moves behind the upper picture.

13.

Hold down , and click the upper picture to add it to the selection. Then press the key to nudge the pictures down until the text is neatly aligned to the right of the pictures.

14.

Click a blank area of the page to release the selection.

CLOSE the 04_Relationships document without saving your changes.
