Checking Out the Neighborhood

Your network is finally ready to go. After you have configured, connected, and perhaps restarted each of your computers, double-click My Network Places on your Start menu. If you are not part of a Windows domain, select View Workgroup Computers. If your network is up and running, you should see one icon for every computer you've connected, as shown in Figure 16.26.

Figure 16.26. When your Workgroup network is up and running, you should see at least one icon for every other computer you've set up.

If you dont see other computers in the View Workgroup Computers window, see "View Workgroup Computers Shows No Other Computers" in the "Troubleshooting" section at the end of this chapter, and read Chapter 22, "Troubleshooting Your Network."

If you are part of a Windows domain, select Entire Network, Entire Contents, Microsoft Windows Network, and click your own domain's icon to see the list of connected computers.

Congratulations: Your network is up and running! But before you continue on to Chapter 17, "Using a Windows XP Network," there's one unpleasant task left: backups. I really suggest doing this now.
