Appendix A. Keyboard Shortcuts

If you've been using a Windows computer, probably the first thing you'll notice after you set up your Mac mini is that you don't have a two-button mouse. (If you really miss your two-button mouse, you can buy one from a handful of third-party companies that make them for the Mac.) You can still get to an item's shortcut menucalled a contextual menu on the Machowever, through a keyboard shortcut: Hold down the Control key while clicking an item, and a contextual menu pops up.

The second thing you may notice is that your Mac's keyboard doesn't have a Ctrl key. Instead, you see a key with a cloverleaf-like symbol and the Apple logo. Apple calls this the Command key, and it behaves like Windows' Ctrl key. You'll also find an Option key, which performs functions similar to Windows' Alt key, and a Control key, which helps compensate for the lack of a second button on your mouse.

But like Windows, Mac OS X offers numerous useful keyboard shortcuts. After you get used to the one-button mouse and new keys, these shortcuts can save you a lot of time. The list in this appendix isn't comprehensive (by working your way through the various menus, you can find many of the shortcuts).
