Chapter 12: Maintaining Data Reporting and Analysis Systems

Overview

Continuous data availability and fast data-retrieval speed are two hallmarks of healthy data reporting and data analysis systems. When systems fail to provide access to their data, or data access is significantly slowed, organizations and individuals are hindered from making quality business decisions in a timely manner. You should make system maintenance a top priority—committing to the time, human resources, and budget it requires—when planning the design and implementation of data reporting and data analysis systems. Database maintenance is as important as the databases themselves.

This chapter introduces the requirements for maintaining data reporting and analysis systems and is written mostly for smaller organizations—organizations that use Access for their data storage or have just moved (or are planning to move) to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for their data storage. Within organizations such as these, database maintenance is often performed by the same person or persons who perform data analysis. For information about maintaining data reporting and analysis systems in larger organizations, see the section “Additional Reading” at the end of this chapter.
