Selecting Code with the Quick Tag Selector

The Quick Tag Selector (shown in Figure 27.1) is a toolbar that appears at the top of the document window in Design view, Split view, and Code view. Each tag in the Quick Tag Selector toolbar is represented by a tag selector, a button that allows you to easily select the tag and perform editing actions on it.

If you do not see the Quick Tag Selector toolbar, see "Quick Tag Selectors Don't Appear" in the "Troubleshooting" section at the end of this chapter.

As you navigate through your Web page, the tag selectors change to reflect the location of the insertion point. Tag selectors are available for the tag at the insertion point's current location as well as all of that tag's parent tags. In other words, if the insertion point is inside a <FONT> tag that appears inside a table cell, you will have a tag selector for the <FONT> tag, <TD> tag, <TR> tag, <TABLE> tag, and assuming that the table is not nested the <BODY> tag as shown in Figure 27.2.

As you hover over tag selectors in Design view, FrontPage will draw a box around the page element represented by the tag selector you are hovering over. This makes it very easy to determine exactly which tag represents a specific element. After you have identified the correct tag selector for the element you want to select, click on the tag selector to select that element, as shown in Figure 27.3.

The tag selector for the currently selected tag will be highlighted in blue and will have a dark blue border. If the number of tag selectors exceeds the number that can be displayed in one row of the Quick Tag Selector, you can use the Scroll Left and Scroll Right buttons on the left and right side of the Quick Tag Selector to display additional tag selectors.

TIP

If you hover over a tag selector, a ScreenTip will display the entire HTML tag and all of its attributes.

By right-clicking the tag selector or by hovering over the tag selector and clicking the arrow button, you can access the options menu for the tag as seen in Figure 27.4. Selecting Select Tag from this menu is the same as clicking the tag selector. Selecting Select Tag Contents from the options menu allows you to select only the contents of the tag and not the tag itself. This is a useful way to select, for example, all the contents of a table cell without selecting the table cell itself.

The other items on the options menu are options for the Quick Tag Editor, which is discussed in the next section.
