Creating and Using Snippets

Snippets are exactly what they sound like little bits of a page that you snip off to use somewhere else. There are two ways to create snippets.

Creating snippets using the Export command:

1.

Select the items on the page that you want to turn into a snippet.

2.

Choose File > Export.

3.

In the Export dialog box choose InDesign Snippet from the Format list .

The Export dialog box lets you save items as InDesign snippets.

Tip

The InDesign Snippet option is not available if you are within a text frame. You cannot drag portions of text as a snippet, only the entire frame.

4.

Name and save the file. The snippet icon appears in the directory.

Creating snippets by dragging:

1.

Select and drag the items that you want to turn into a snippet onto the desktop. The Snippet icon appears with a bizarre temporary name.

2.

Change the name to something more understandable.

Once you have created snippets, you can drag them onto a page.

Dragging snippets onto a page:

1.

Select the snippet on the desktop or in the file directory.

2.

Drag the Snippet icon onto the InDesign document page. The snippet items appear on the page in the same position they were in when first created.

Tip

Snippets also can be be dragged from the Adobe Bridge onto a page.
