Where to Find More Common Ground

The CS2 applications have still more features and work approaches in common. Here's where we discuss them in other chapters of this book.

  • Smart Objects. Smart objects "remember" where they came from and adjust to new conditions. For example, in Photoshop CS2, they intelligently scale and transform images without loss of quality. They let you edit multiple smart objects by making changes to a master. See Chapter 9, "Smart Objects and Intelligent Layouts."

  • Layers. Each CS2 application supports layers. It's increasingly easy to move layers from one application to another, and retain much of what's there. See Chapter 12, "The Flexibility of Layers."

  • Creating and Applying Styles. Styles can be created for graphics in Illustrator CS2; for character, paragraph, and object attributes in InDesign CS2; and for layers in Photoshop CS2. See Chapter 8, "Working with Style," and Chapter 12, "The Flexibility of Layers."

  • Presets for Settings. All of the CS2 applications can save common settings called presets that can be called up quickly. There are presets for text import (see Chapter 8), print and PDF export (see Chapters 14 and 16), transparency flattening (see Chapter 16), and tracing (see Chapter 5).

  • Actions and Scripts. Actions and scripts can be written to automate frequently used features. These are described in Chapter 15, "Automating Your Work."
