how'd they get that look?

Just looking at a site, you can't always tell how it was built; different technologies can sometimes create similar effects. Here's a selection of eye-catching designs and how they were achieved.

Herman Miller

The layout is done with tables to align page elements and create white space between them. The logo, tagline, and chair are all in one image. The text on the left is written in plain HTML text and formatted with stylesheets.

Nantucket Nectars

The layout here is done with tables. Large images are sliced and placed in adjoining table cells, so they appear continuous. When you mouse over the bottlecap logo, it "flips" over, revealing the trademark quote inside the cap. This image swap, or rollover, is done with JavaScript.

Nike

The layout is done entirely in Flash. The background image remains static, while the image on the lower right animates and changes. When you select from the cascading menus, a "click" sound confirms your choice.

Happy Cog Design

The layout is done with stylesheets and <div> tags. When you select an image, a corresponding text block appears below the image grid. This design is 100% XHTML-compliant.
