Chapter 10. Management of SANs

NEtwork management has one central objective: to maintain the stable transport of data across the network infrastructure. What is done with the data after it has arrived at its destination is usually outside the scope of traditional network management disciplines. As networking has emerged behind the server in the form of SANs, however, both the transport of data and the management of data itself are critical to stable operation. This chapter provides an overview of the unique complexities of SAN management, including storage transport and storage data management. Although the lack of a standardized management model has inhibited SAN adoption, new uniform initiatives promise to ease management burdens in the administration of multivendor SANs.
