Given a network design or a set of requirements evaluate a solution to incorporate equipment and technology within a Campus design.
WAN design has never been more complex and crucial to a successful project than it is today. In addition to traditional technologies such as ISDN and Frame Relay, there are many new options available that are indeed viable solutions to modern WAN design issues. Technologies such as DSL and even VPN across the public Internet are playing a larger and larger role in the modern WAN. Even wireless technologies have increased dramatically in recent years and must be considered as part of any design project.
This chapter introduces WAN design. We will organize the many technologies into categories, discussing the pros and cons of each. We will discuss WAN design methodologies and the steps to take in starting the WAN design. We will look at several specific WAN technologies, both tried-and-true as well as several new options. Finally, we will discuss specific WAN technologies and their particulars.
This chapter addresses the following topics:
Wide area networking options
Planning and design methodologies
Cisco hardware and implementation issues
WAN technologies in detail
