Case Studies

Complete the following exercises for the three case study companies. You may wish to refer back to Chapter 4, “Pre-Design Procedures,” to review the complete overview of each company. Once you have completed these exercises, you may compare your solutions with those in the back of the book. Realize that even though your answers may differ from those, that does not necessarily mean one is right and the other is wrong.

Have-A-Seat

  1. Describe where access lists would be used in Have-A-Seat’s network.

  2. Dave is concerned about bandwidth utilization in the switch from terminal-based to web-based communications. Would you recommend data compression as a possible solution?

MPS Construction

There are no exercises for MPS Construction in this chapter.

Willow Creek School District

  1. Scott is concerned about his Novell servers at the high schools and junior high schools being accessed from other schools. He wants everyone (including the high schools and junior high schools) to be able to access the Novell servers at the District Office, but he only wants local access to the servers located in schools. How can he use access lists to accomplish this?

  2. Scott is concerned about security when faculty members access the NT server at the District Office to store grade and attendance information. He would like to encrypt those sessions only. How would you respond?
