Summary

This chapter described many IOS features that go significantly beyond the basic function of routing packets. These features are available on all routers capable of running the current IOS. These features include access lists that provide both security services and bandwidth utilization and proxy services that allow the router to respond to LAN-based queries on behalf of devices on remote segments.

Compression can be used to save bandwidth at the expense of router CPU utilization. Queuing allows time-sensitive traffic to be prioritized. RSVP allows for bandwidth reservation across an internetwork.
