Differences in Creating Animation

table of contents

Animation keyframes Maya creates keyframes in a slightly more proactive way than max does. In Maya, you must create a key for the changed value, usually by pressing the s key. This action keys the variables you have changed to the current frame. Maya includes an Auto Keyframe button (the key icon at the lower-right corner) that's similar to max's Animate mode. However, Auto Keyframe doesn't work until an object has at least one key set for it. Be careful about which variables have had keys set; the Auto Keyframe feature can apply a key to every variable or just to the adjusted ones. This is set in the Preferences dialog box under the Keys category. In general, you should apply keys to only the adjusted parameters. In this mode, Maya behaves just like max's Animate mode except for having to manually create at least one key for a given variable. Unlike max, there is no automatic frame 0 key. Animated variables have a light orange background in the Channel Box.

Animation settings Playback speed and other settings are in the Preferences dialog box under the Settings category. As in max, there is a hot button near the play button at the lower-right corner of the screen to open this dialog box. You set the overall animation length and focus area by adjusting the Range Slider, just below the Time Line.
