Chapter 11. State Management in ASP.NET

I'll never forget what's-his-name…

The web is a mysterious and anonymous place. People come and go; ships pass in the night without even knowing it. This unfortunately creates some problems when developing web applications. You need to know who people are, and at the very least you need to be able to identify individual users of the web site.

The problem originates in a web server's bad attitude. If it were up to the web server, all it would do is deliver pages. It doesn't care who wants the page, to whom it sent pages, or whether those users are coming back. This rotten attitude has created quite a quandary for web designers.
