Appendix E: Switching to Mac OS X

Overview

Although Mac OS X has now been around for several years , the Jaguar 10.2 version released in fall 2002 is the first real one ‚ the first that works reliably and truly unlocks the promise of an advanced Mac OS that is stable, powerful, and flexible. InDesign 2 supported Mac OS X as well as Mac OS 9, so experienced InDesign users will likely already be familiar with Mac OS X.

However, because both QuarkXPress 5 (and earlier versions) and PageMaker 7 (and earlier versions) could run only in Mac OS 9 compatibility mode under Mac OS X, most PageMaker and QuarkXPress users stuck with Mac OS 9 so they'd have a consistent operating system and not have to worry about managing fonts and other tools in two environments. But now, PageMaker and QuarkXPress users switching to InDesign CS have to switch to Mac OS X and leave Mac OS 9 behind, since InDesign CS does not run on older versions of the Mac OS.

Very quickly, you'll find that Mac OS X is not Mac OS 9. Although there are some similarities in terms of icons, the two operating systems are very different, and former PageMaker and QuarkXPress users steeped in Mac OS 9 will experience some culture shock . If you're one of those getting used to Mac OS X for the first time, I've put together a quick guide to adjusting to Mac OS X, so you can master the essentials and then unlock the new features in InDesign CS.
