Installing InDesign CS

Both the Mac OS and Windows installers for InDesign CS provide easy-to-follow on-screen instructions. Before beginning the installation process, make sure you have your serial number provided by Adobe.

Tip ‚

Both installers provide a Custom Install option that lets you decide what to install with InDesign. Even if you're not sure whether you want all the InDesign plug-ins, filters, and the other items, you may want to install them anyway. Installing more than you absolutely need is better than not having a feature or information available when you need it. (You can always disable plug-ins and filters via InDesign Configure Plug-ins on the Mac or Help Configure Plug-ins in Windows, as covered in Chapter 36.)

STEPS: Installing InDesign

  1. Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive or access the CD over the network.

If necessary, double-click the CD icon to open the CD.

  2. Double-click the Installer program.

On the Mac, you may be asked for a system password to allow the installation of new software.

  3. The InDesign installer will ask you what language to install, US English or International English; choose one and click Continue.

International English is British English, used in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and most former British colonies.

  4. Read the License Agreement, and click Accept to continue.

If you want to file this information, click Print to create a hard copy.

  5. In the next dialog box, type your name , company (leave blank if you're an individual, such as a self-employed designer), and your serial number, then click Continue.

You'll be shown a new dialog box to confirm your name, company, and serial number. If correct, click Continue; if incorrect, click Back.

  6. The next dialog box gives you the opportunity to decide where to install InDesign; choose the location and click Next.

    • By default, the installer places InDesign in the Applications folder (Mac) or Program Files folder (Windows) on your startup hard drive. If you want to change the location (for example, to your Applications folder), choose Select Folder from the Install Location menu. Select or create another folder, and click Select.

    • If you're short on hard-drive space ‚ or you're very confident that the installation includes items you don't need ‚ choose Custom Install from the menu at the top of the dialog box. Click the arrow next to "InDesign 3.0" to see all the options. Uncheck any items that you don't want to install. If you need more information about an item to make this decision, click the i button next to the item.

  7. When you've decided what to install and where to install it, click Install.

The installation should only take a few minutes.

  8. When the installation is complete, an alert asks if you want to register online. If you have an Internet connection and are ready to register, click Yes.

This launches your default browser and takes you through the registration process. After you register online, an alert may prompt you to restart your computer, depending on whether system-level files were installed.
