Odds and ends. When you're working with a program as complex, capable, and extensible as InDesign, you're going to have odds and ends. The eight appendixes to this book collect such odds and ends.
Several appendixes provide more context related to InDesign itself. One appendix walks you through the installation of InDesign, while another walks you through the companion Web site for this book. Yet another appendix brings together all the keyboard shortcuts mentioned throughout the book in one handy place. Another gives you one-stop shopping to see what's new in InDesign CS compared to the previous version.
Several appendixes cover issues for users making a major software change: One covers the move to Mac OS X, since InDesign CS doesn't run on previous versions of the Macintosh operating system. There are also two appendixes for users switching to InDesign from other layout programs: one for QuarkXPress users and one for PageMaker users.
Finally, I've provided a tour of the companion program InCopy, which larger publishers should consider so they can manage the flow of files during the layout and production process and provide editors and copy editors the ability to edit and copyfit stories in production, as well as write headlines that fit the layout space, without needing a full copy of InDesign.
Make no mistake: These appendixes cover key issues about InDesign. But the book is organized around publishing workflow and the discrete segments in that workflow. The topics in the appendixes either transcend that workflow breakdown or live outside it.
