Chapter 40: Typography Theory and Practice

Overview

Desktop publishing has changed typography forever. In the old, old days, typefaces were available in a limited number, and those were available only in a limited number of sizes. You couldn't condense or expand them. And you certainly couldn't add drop shadows or make them print as outlines without hours of work in a darkroom. Desktop publishing has changed all that. By rendering type into a series of mathematical equations ‚ curves and lines and angles ‚ and manipulating that math with today's fast computers, type can be almost anything. In the early days of desktop publishing, that led to experimentation, often without the understanding of several hundred years of typographic traditions and that led to a lot of bad results. That was more than a decade ago, however, and good taste has prevailed. InDesign has very good typographic tools that can dramatically reduce typographic awkwardness. This chapter is your guide to typographic good taste.

While typography can be decorative , at its core it is the art of not calling attention to the typeface, but to the content itself, letting the shapes of the letters on a page serve as a carefully constructed , yet transparent guide for the reader's eye to follow.
