Summary

This chapter touched on the services available in SLES and provided you with enough information to get the services up and running. At this point, you should have an understanding of the services available through xinetd and those governed through /etc/init.d. Other topics covered include the services that will most impact on your clients: mail, FTP, web, and file sharing. We also examined different ways of accessing the server for remote management.

Many of the concepts introduced here are quite complex and may require a significant investment of time to understand them completely. The YaST configuration tool is a quick way to navigate through the configurations. For a number of services such as Samba, DNS, and HTTP, additional changes may be required outside the scope of YaST.

In the course of the chapter, we introduced a number of concepts that were not directly tied to the tools. It is imperative to consider the security implications of the configuration options available. Recognizing the benefits of one option over another is important. We hope that the additional topics covered here will help with that understanding.
