Rotating the Views in the Viewports

 < Day Day Up >

To switch to this mode, click the Arc Rotate button in the navigation toolbar. When using a three-button mouse, it is convenient to rotate the view using the middle mouse button while pressing and holding the <Alt> key. The <Shift> key can be used for rotation around one axis.

The Arc Rotate drop-down menu on the Navigation panel is very important. Using this menu, you can determine the rotation center for the viewport: coordinate origin, selected object (Arc Rotate Selected) or selected sub-object (Arc Rotate SubObject), for example, vertex or edge. Unfortunately, 3ds max doesn't provide a command to sequentially go through rotation centers but, generally, it isn't that important. You can simply select rotation around sub-objects. If no object is selected within a scene, the coordinate origin will be used as the rotation center.
